According to a Wall Street Journal article, 91% of cosmetic surgery patients are women. However, the number of men is on the rise. At Southern Surgical Arts, our male patients are primarily interested in Face lifts, Liposuction, SmartLipo, Tummy Tucks and male breast reduction, which often treats Gynecomastia, which is abnormal development of large mammary glands in males resulting in breast enlargement.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons noted that between 2000 and 2009 the number of men undergoing an Abdominopasty (Tummy Tuck) doubled. "Most of our patients think that Tummy Tucks are primarily for women who want Mommy Makeovers but the reality is we can all gain weight and thus have excess skin in the abdomen region. Once this skin is stretched and a patient loses weight, the excess skin will never dissapear but it can be removed with abdominoplasty techniques," said Dr. Nease.
Male breast reduction is also a procedure gaining popularity. Men like breasts – just not on themselves. So, how does this happen to men? "In our practice, the primary reason is due to a patient being overweight," said Dr. Nease. "We can usually correct it with a combination of diet changes to lose weight and by using SmartLipo. However, there are other causes for Gynecomastia and every patient’s care plan is customized to their needs."
Facelifts are common in older men and rose 14% in 2010 according to a Consumer Reports Health article released in March of 2011. Many men are starting to look more into the mirror and see the signs of aging. Others see it as a way to stay competitive in the workplace. We recently posted an article on a study that connects beauty to happiness. "Although I nor Dr. Nease would ever promise a transformation using cosmetic surgery, we can enhance your own beauty," said Dr. Deal.
Liposuction, SmartLipo are probably the most common requested procedures in men at our practice and nationally rose 7% in 2010. Liposuction procedures can address the excess fat in which exercise will not eliminate. "SmartLipo can also add the extra benefit of tightening the skin as well. This is a particularly powerful tool for a man's neck and flanks," said Dr. Deal. "Overall there are many areas that traditional Liposuction and SmartLipo can address that despite ones best efforts just seem to be resistant to diet and exercise."
