It takes heart, commitment, and unending dedication to become an exceptional surgeon. Dr. Gusching has worked hard at developing each of these special qualities. Every year he travels to Guatemala as a volunteer surgeon, attending to hundreds of patients. The day begins at 8:00 A.M. and ends at 10 P.M. In less than two weeks, Dr. Gusching and his colleagues complete over 200 surgeries in a single operating room with little space. In his words, “It kind of grounds you and reminds you why you went into medicine in the first place.”
His sense of mission and purpose was also extended to the Ohio Army National Guard, where he served as a field surgeon and worked non-stop hours in Combat Support Hospitals. These hospitals are a self-contained, mobile tent city that accommodate operating and recovery rooms, pharmacies, and emergency rooms. Everything a surgeon needs to take care of troops before they’re medevac’d to a permanent medical facility.
Now, Dr. Gusching joins the award-winning team of cosmetic surgeons at Southern Surgical Arts. His focus is full body and facial surgery. In other words, just about anything that may require cosmetic attention. He received his medical degree from Ohio University in Athens and graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. The university’s focus is training osteopathic primary care physicians, emphasizing the “whole-person approach to treatment and care.”
Dr. Gusching completed his five-year general surgery residency at Cleveland Clinic-South Pointe Hospital, where he was appointed chief of surgery in his fifth year. He is an active member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Gusching is board-certified by both the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. Southern Surgical Arts welcomes Dr. Gusching to the practice.
