Cosmetic Surgery Center Teams with Charities to Give Back to Community
Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Jun 4, 2012 5:59:00 PM
Southern Surgical Arts, Chattanooga's leading cosmetic surgery center, is pleased to announce their recent alignment with the Breast Oasis and Allergan Brilliant Distinction charities. Through their philanthropic efforts, Southern Surgical Arts will give back to women in the local community.
Both charity outreach programs have a common thread -- they target women who have undergone a cosmetic surgery procedure.
Through Breast Oasis, women who have had breast augmentations and no longer fit in their pre-surgery bras are encouraged to donate the slightly used under garments. Once collected by participating retailers and cosmetic surgery centers, like Southern Surgical Arts, these bras are then sorted, washed, gift-wrapped and delivered to women in need. Recipients, many of which are in homeless or crisis centers, are even provided with messages of encouragement from the donators through an online bra-identification number messaging system.
To date, Breast Oasis has collected and donated over 100,000 bras to women across the country and has plans to expand internationally, including in disaster zones. With the recent launch of Southern Surgical Arts' bra collection initiatives they hope to take in 400 bras for the Breast Oasis charity this year.
"It is truly a grass-roots movement to bring the community together," said Dr. Chad Deal, a fellowship-trained and Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon at the surgery center. "Champion Cleaners' Hickory Valley Road location will be laundering the bras we collect, and donate them to Chattanooga Room in the Inn, a temporary home for women and children in need."
Southern Surgical Arts cosmetic surgery practice is also working with the Allergan Brilliant Distinctions program. Allergan Brilliant Distinctions gives credit to patients each time they receive a BOTOX® Cosmetic or JUVÉDERM® XC treatment from a participating physician. These credits can be redeemed at a later time for discounts on additional procedures or donated as cash contributions to Dress for Success, the Make a Wish Foundation or other charities. The points can now be donated to Southern Surgical Arts' charity.
"Bring the Breast Oasis and Allergan Brilliant Distinctions programs to the Chattanooga area couldn't be more exciting," says Dr. Carey Nease, a triple-board certified cosmetic surgeon at Southern Surgical Arts. "We truly believe that through these amazing charities we can make a positive impact in the lives of women."
To drop off bras for Breast Oasis, visit either of Southern Surgical Arts' locations located at One North Shore, 200 Manufacturers Rd - Suite 105, Chattanooga, TN or 120 Cornerstone Way, Calhoun GA. For more information on donating credits earned in the Allergan Brilliant Distinctions program, call Southern Surgical Arts at 423-266-3331.

Dads Need Makeovers, Too
Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on May 30, 2012 6:00:00 PM
We talk a lot about the Mommy Makeover that helps moms get their pre-pregnancy figure back. It usually includes a breast augmentation (with or without a lift), liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). But in today's fast-paced environment, Dads are also helping take kids to soccer. So, let's not forget about Dad's option to help improve his appearance, too!
Origins of Plastic Surgery
Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on May 7, 2012 6:00:00 PM
Thanks to a colleague and friend, Dr. Landon McLain, for allowing us to share this information about the origins of plastic surgery.
---------
Dr. McLain wrote about this graph found on National Geographic's blog.
"This is fairly accurate but leaves out some important info. The famed Indian surgeon, Sushruta in fact, also vividly described eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) in striking detail and very similar to techniques used today.
Also, the origin of plastic surgery in the US is an interesting one... In 1917 the US entered WWI which was a war primarily fought "in the trenches" (origin of this term commonly used in American football).
This resulted in devastating head and neck injuries combined with increased survival due to the new steel helmets. As there were no "plastic surgeons" at the time, the SGO (Surgeon General's Office) combined general surgeons and dentists/oral surgeons and created to first "plastic surgeons" to render the head and neck reconstructive procedures required to rehabilitate these unfortunate servicemen.
In fact, the first plastic surgery society in the US, now the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) formed in 1921, required both a dental degree and medical degree for many years. The first president of the society, Dr. Truman Brophy had been originally trained as an oral surgeon.
Interestingly, the first Professor of Plastic Surgery at Harvard University, Dr. Varaztad Kazanjian was originally a dentist as well as the first editor of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) journal Dr. Robert H Ivy. In many ways, plastic surgery owes its origins to the field of dentistry."

Chin Augmentations on the Rise in Chattanooga
Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Apr 30, 2012 6:01:00 PM
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of chin implants grew 71% last year to 20,680. The largest increase was in patients 40 and older and included both men and women. "I've performed more chin augmentations in the past two years than ever before," said Dr. Carey Nease, a triple board-certified cosmetic and facial plastic surgeon from Chattanooga.
"A well defined chin helps give balance to the face," said Nease. At Southern Surgical Arts we perform chin augmentation, using implants to enhance one's profile. Research also suggest that strong jawlines help move up the corporate ladder.
A New York plastic surgeon, Darrick Antell, who presented highly anecdotal evidence in 2007 to World Congress on Liposuction Surgery and Advances in Cosmetic Surgery in Dubai. Antell drew a line from the nose tip to the chin on photos of 42 CEOs from 2005's top 50 Fortune 500 companies. Some 90% showed nonreceding-to-prominent chins, vs. 40% of the U.S. population. People equate such jawlines with confidence and character, says Antell. When it's time to pick a top manager, the one with the Superman jaw gets the job.

Southern Surgical Arts Offers Mommy Makeover Plus
Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Apr 16, 2012 6:01:00 PM
This year treat yourself to a post-baby body that just may be better than the original with a Mommy Makeover Plus from Chattanooga's leading Cosmetic Surgery Center, Southern Surgical Arts. Specific to their practice, the complete Mommy Makeover Plus procedure is only found at Southern Surgical Arts.
During a Mommy Makeover Plus, Southern Surgical Arts' board-certified Dr. Nease and Dr. Deal provide a combination of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures aimed at restoring a women’s body to her pre-pregnancy days. The Mommy Makeover has traditionally included a tummy tuck, breast augmentation (with lift if desired) and SmartLipo laser body sculpting. Now, offered exclusively at Southern Surgical Arts, is the Mommy Makeover 'PLUS' vaginal rejuvenation for a more complete approach to regaining that youthful feeling.
Just over 4 million babies are born in the United States each year. Today, many women are electing to under-go a Mommy Makeover Plus at Southern Surgical Arts because of the lasting effects single, or multiple, pregnancies have left on their body. These undesirable after effects include the stretching of skin, increase of fat deposits, noticeable stretch marks, weakness of the abdominal wall and an overly relaxed vagina. Having even just a few of these conditions can cause women to feel insecure with the dread of a forever-lost youthful figure.
Commenting on her treatment at Southern Surgical Arts, one patient noted, "The staff at Southern Surgical Arts is well trained and very professional. They made me very comfortable throughout the whole Mommy Makeover Plus procedure and my recovery time was not as bad as I originally thought. I now have my confidence back and no one would ever guess that I am a mother of three!"
For more information on Southern Surgical Arts' exclusive Mommy Makeover Plus, please call 423-266-3331 or visit www.SouthernSugricalArts.com.

After only 15 months in the Chattanooga, North Georgia and North Alabama area, Dr. Deal, a double-board certified cosmetic surgeon, has received the award for one of America's Most Compassionate Doctors by vitals.com. The award is based on reviews written by hundreds and thousands of patients. While physicians generally receive positive feedback from their patients, only a select few receive praise about the compassion that accompanied their care. In fact, of the nation's 720,000 active physicians, less than 3% were accorded this honor by their patients in 2011.
Thank you to all the patients who continually provide positive feedback to both Dr. Deal and Dr. Nease at Southern Surgical Arts. We are truly honored each and every time.
