Cosmetic Plastic Surgery on the Rise for Baby Boomers in the US

Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Feb 28, 2013 12:40:00 PM

In 2011, more than 1.6 million Americans elected to undergo cosmetic surgery, also known as plastic surgery, while upwards of 8 million opted for nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, according to the Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. And it’s not just young Hollywood starlets looking to augment their chests and Botox away hardly noticeable lines around the eyes and mouth. The New York Times recently ran an article about men and women in their golden years who are getting a new lease on life, primarily by re-sculpting their eyes, a procedure that the American Society of Plastic Surgeons ranked the fourth most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S.

About Cosmetic Eye and Brow Lifts
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a very safe procedure that eliminates saggy, droopy eyelids and under-eye bags. With an average recovery time of just three to four days, it’s one of the most rewarding procedures offered by Dr. Carey Nease and Dr. Chad Deal, both board certified cosmetic surgeons at Southern Surgical Arts in Tennessee and North Georgia.

Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedure in 2011

Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Apr 5, 2012 6:02:00 PM
The most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in 2011 is...drum roll, please... liposuction! According the statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgery, liposuction accounted for 325,332 cosmetic surgical procedures in 2011. That is more than the other top procedures: breast augmentations, breast lifts, eyelid surgeries and tummy tucks.

Dr. Deal and Dr. Nease are experts in the field of cosmetic surgery. Just last week, they presented to other surgeons from around the country on their liposuction techniques at the AACS conference in Beaver Creek, CO for Advanced Techniques in Liposuction Surgery & Body Contouring. Dr. Deal presented the Brazilian Butt Lift, which is a coined term for large volume fat transfer to the buttock. Liposuction is a large part of the procedure in which fat is taken and harvested. Dr. Nease presented on his technique for arm lifts, which usually require liposuction before removing the excess skin. Dr. Nease is also a frequent speaker and instructor for Cynosure, the company that makes the SmartLipo machine.

In June of 2012, Dr. Nease and Dr. Deal will again teach other surgeons on liposuction techniques at the AACS's New and Established Techniques in Breast and Body Contouring: A Hands-On Cadaver Workshop in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Nease will discuss the different types of liposuction and how they are different and Dr. Deal will discuss the popular topic, the Brazilian Butt Lift.

Dr. Deal and Dr. Nease are committed to staying up-to-date with the newest technology available for liposuction. There are many different techniques in the marketplace and ensuring we bring the safest and latest technology to our patients is our commitment to you.

Baby Boomers Look for Face Lift Options

Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Oct 3, 2011 6:10:00 PM
For years, economists have said that the baby boomer discretionary income has fueled the Face Lift market for cosmetic surgery practices. Pair that with cosmetic surgery becoming more widely accepted, and advancing laser technology and science, it's a recipe for any baby boomer to become overwhelmed with their options. Cosmetic surgery includes many elective procedures for the face and body, but studies show that baby boomers are ready to have their facial appearance reflect how they feel on the inside.

"I've done more than 2,000 face lifts and facial rejuvenation procedures, and we are seeing more patients who want a more natural look," said Dr. Nease, a Triple-Board Certified Cosmetic and Facial Plastic Surgeon at Southern Surgical Arts. Seniors in good physical health can be considered for most cosmetic surgeries. Advancing age is rarely a disqualifying factor. Those with any significant medical problems may be discouraged from any invasive surgery or anesthesia and may be steered toward less invasive procedures that may still be beneficial.

Last year there were 84,685 surgical procedures among patients age 65 and older, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. They included 26,635 facelifts; 24,783 cosmetic eyelid operations; 6,469 liposuctions; 5,874 breast reductions; 3,875 forehead lifts; 3,339 breast lifts; and 2,414 breast augmentations.

Except for a brief turndown during the recession, those numbers have been rising for years now, and experts say the trend seems likely to accelerate as baby boomers begin to pass age 65.

The Cosmetic Face Lift is a face lifting technique offered by our fellowship trained and Board-Certified Cosmetic Surgeons. Because Dr. Deal and Dr. Nease are trained in the latest techniques, the Cosmetic Facelift provides a more natural, refreshed, rejuvenated look that the traditional plastic surgery facelift. The ideal candidate is usually more than 50 years of age. Less invasive options such as Botox and the Laser Facelift are also available.

Southern Surgical Arts offers complimentary consultations to all cosmetic surgery patients. For more information on facial rejuvenation procedures and face lifting techniques, please call for an appointment or visit our website at www.southernsurgicalarts.com.

Who is qualified to perform cosmetic surgery?

Posted by Southern Surgical Arts on Jan 11, 2011 9:22:00 AM
We recently came across this article in Plastic Surgery Practice that provides two view points in the ongoing debate of which specialties are qualified to perform plastic or cosmetic surgery.  More than 30 states have expanded the scope of practice for plastic surgery to allow other surgery sub-specialties to perform procedures for which they have extensive training.  Here is the article:

Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeons Encroach on Plastic Surgery Arena + Response

by jfrentzen 1/3/2011 10:17:00 AM

It's not really news, but it is a trend. There have been recent reports about how, by allowing oral-maxillofacial specialists to expand the scope of practice into the plastic surgery arena, some US states have created a patient safety problem -- shoddy work has started cropping up as a result. I don't believethere is anything inherantly wrong with letting oral-maxillofacial surgeons do cosmetic surgeries, but it is likely that a lack of appropriate training for these new "plastic surgeons" is causing problems. In depth: The fight over your face:

There's a turf war going on over your face.

Some 30 states have expanded what's called "the scope of practice" for oral-maxillofacial surgeons, allowing them to do cosmetic procedures beyond the mouth area.

That's got plastic surgeons up in arms. Dr. Lucie Capek is a plastic surgeon whose work usually involves recontouring faces. Now, she's drawing a line about who should and shouldn't be allowed to do the work she diligently trained for.

It is troubling enough, says Capek, that doctors other than plastic surgeons are offering Botox, facial fillers, and liposuction, but now that highly specialized dentists known as oral-maxillofacial surgeons want to be able to do elective plastic surgery, enough's enough.

Capek said “To me this is about patient safety, education.”

Capek says that in states that have expanded the scope of practice, problems with shoddy work are occurring, even in New York, as non-plastic surgeons branch out to expand their income stream.

Dr. Lawrence Busino is an oral-maxillofacial surgeon. He's spent his career reconstructing faces damaged by accidents or disease, and correcting congenital defects like this. He says the battle over who can do what, is nothing new.

“This has been an issue in New York State for the past 20 years. And it is a turf war issue, absolutely.”

Read it all.

One of PSP's editorial advisory board members, Joseph Naimtu, III, DMD, FAACS, responds to the referenced article above:

It is most interesting that this tired and self-serving argument is still being tossed around.  There is not a shred of evidence that any specialty has better or worse outcomes than others. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS) get superior head and neck training and are equally -- if not better -- trained than any other specialty that does cosmetic facial surgery.

I can promise you that OMS see as many or more complications from other specialties including plastic surgery than the other way around. It is the person, his or her individual training and outcomes that make the difference. Anyone who tries to propagate the “dentist”-doing-cosmetic-facial-surgery is merely attempting to confuse the public. The reason that this has passed in 30 states is because the training and outcome of oral and maxillofacial surgeons supports the decision and vote of the lawmakers.

The real problem is any specialty that does not get adequate surgical training -- and this is rarely a problem with OMSs. In reality, there are numerous specialties that perform high-quality cosmetic facial surgery, including plastics, ENT, ophthalmology, derms, and OMS. To deny this is only protecting turf and dollars. There are great doctors and outcomes in all of these specialties and poor doctors and outcomes, as well. To attempt to say that anyone of these specialties “is better” or “worse” is crazy.

Move on. We have been there and back with this empty argument. I have folders of poor outcomes from multiple specialties and I am sure they have some of mine. My practice is limited to cosmetic surgery and I perform about 80 facelifts and over 500 eyelid lifts a year. I am a Diamond-level Botox provide, have authored four textbooks, and published hundreds of articles in every specialty that deals with the face. I am not bragging, just making the point that the specialty does not make the surgeon.
