Fig_17_Chin_Implant.jpgA strong chin and jawline are considered a beauty ideal for both men and women. Yet many patients are unhappy with the appearance of their chin because it may be “weak” or not well-defined, or does not provide enough contrast from the neck. As a result, chin implants have become common in cosmetic surgery. Keep reading to learn 5 important facts about this popular procedure.

  1. Scarring is minimal. The surgeon only needs to make a small incision on the under surface of the chin that will fade as it heals and is typically not noticeable.
  2. Silicone implants are used for the procedure, due to their safety and natural-looking appearance. The goal of a good chin implant is to provide beautiful, strong, and natural results without looking “done.”
  3. Recovery time is typically only 3-5 days, with the most commonly reported side effects being mild bruising and swelling and discomfort that can be treated with over the counter pain medicine. Some patients may also experience some numbness for a few months after the procedure.
  4. Your surgeon may recommend a liposuction procedure of the neck or Kybella injection in conjunction with your chin augmentation to achieve the most significant result. Many times the jawline is further improved by removing excess fat in the neck so that the area is further defined.
  5. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with light sedation but may be performed under general anesthesia depending on each patient’s unique needs. A chin augmentation procedure generally takes about 45 minutes to perform.
